One of the best things about oranges is that they are available year-round. Whether you’re looking for a juicy snack or you need some zest for a recipe, you can find oranges any time of the year. But did you know that there are actually different varieties of oranges and the best time to buy each of them? Let's explore when is the best time to buy oranges and why.


When Are Oranges In Season?

In general, oranges are in season from October through May, with peak production from December to March. That means this is the prime time to find orange varieties like Navels, Cara Caras, Blood Oranges and Valencia’s at their freshest and most flavorful. These varieties can often be found in stores all year round but if you want to get your hands on the juiciest fruit possible, then spring is definitely your time!

Different Orange Varieties

The good news is that no matter what type of orange you’re looking for, there’s likely one that fits your needs perfectly! Here are some of the most popular types of oranges out there:
Navels – This variety has a thick skin and sweet flavor perfect for snacking! They’re great eaten raw or used in recipes like marmalade. Navels are usually in season from November through April.

Cara Cara Oranges:

This pink-fleshed variety has a mild flavor and slightly tart aftertaste. They’re great for juices or cooking desserts like tarts and cakes. Cara Caras are usually available from December through April.

Blood Oranges:

These oranges have a deep red flesh and flavor reminiscent of raspberry jam! Blood oranges make delicious juices and sorbets as well as being used in savory dishes like salads or sauces. Blood oranges are typically available during winter months (December through March).

Valencia Oranges:

This classic orange variety has bright orange skin with a sweet yet slightly acidic taste perfect for juicing! Valencias also make great additions to salads or salsas because their peels can be easily removed without leaving any pith behind. Valencias are usually available from January through June.
